Sailing Experience Day - 14 June 2008
For the second year running ACTS went for a sailing experience day at the West Wilts Youth Sailing Association centre at Westbury. The day is designed for young people who have had no previous experience of sailing to give them a taster for it.
Messing about in boats
WWYSA is an association registered with the Royal Yachting Association and their chief instructor (who has organised this for us) was awarded the RYA coach of the year award last year. They offer the taster days to school and youth groups and it is run with the help of their regular sailing club members.
The day was structured to cover the basic rigging of the boat, tacking and a dry capsize (just in case they tip the boat over!). Once they were familar with the boats, they were set to sail round a figure of eight course and then compete in a couple of races.

The day was rounded off with some paddling races and one or two silly games. The youngsters were all awarded a certificate as a recognition of their achievement.

St Julians' 50th Anniversary
St Julians Baptist Church is celebrating its 50th anniversary in April 2008. To mark this milestone we are holding a series of special events which will include members past and present, those who have had an association with the church (eg were baptised or married here) and members of the local community.

Soul'd Out? Camp 2007
Seven young people from St Julians youth group, ACTS spent a week on camp at Stoke Flemming, near Dartmouth at the end of August. There were also ten other campers from youth groups in Gloucestershire and Somerset.
Soul'd Out? was started by Brian Trott in his capacity as area field worker for Crusaders (now called Urban Saints) and he has continued to organise it since leaving his role with Crusaders and becoming self employed with his SupaStrikers initiative for young people.
At the end of a week of camp
The camp ran for six nights and uses the site at Stoke Flemming which is also used by a number of holidays run by other organisations during the summer. Many of the young people viewed the traditional ridge tents with suspicion when they arrived but soon got used to proper camping.
Crab fishers
During the week, there were outings to Dartmouth and Brixham as well as days out at the nearby Woodlands Venture Park and the Quay West water park via a ride on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway.
It's a Knockout
On site, activities included table tennis and pool competitions, together with craft and "It's a Knockout" and each day there was a short session introducing the campers to the biblical perspective on issues such as "Peer Pressure", "What is a Christian?" and "The Environment".

Despite a little bit of culture shock when they first arrived on site, by the end of the week, most of the campers were asking their new friends whether they were coming again next year. Something that I am sure the leaders are looking forward to with almost as much enthusiasm!
St Julians would like to thank the organisers of the holiday and the volunteers from the other groups who made it possible. We would also like to thank Adrian Powys from T J Davies Funerals for making the Dignity Community Minibus available to us so helping to make the cost of the holiday more affordable for our young people.
Hungarian Bible Camp
St Julians sent a total of ten leaders to help run English language bible camps in Hungary and Ukraine during August. The teams used the story of Joseph as the basis for English speaking exercises and language games to help Hungarian speaking students develop their spoken English skills.
The camps have been running for over fifteen years and the impressions of some of the British leaders are captured in an article written (and translated) by Zsófia Kovács, one of the students on the camp in Beregszasz.
50th Anniversary
St Julians is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2008. There is a series of special events planned for the coming year.
